What Does The Score "3.5" Mean?
Solid: Above the bar. The good parts sizably outweigh any shortcomings. I'm glad to have watched it once.I'm not a romcom person, but in the distant past I learned the hard way that you gotta watch your girlfriend's favorite movie, no matter what. Plus I'll almost always watch a movie I haven't seen before. The title, the plot structure, and the genre make it obvious that Harry and Sally end up together, but you don't watch this kind of movie to be surprised at the ending: you watch for how it all shakes out.
That means a film like this lives or dies by individual scenes and the strength of its characters; When Harry Met Sally delivers on both counts. The protagonists are relatable and likable, yet flawed, and they experience realistic, meaningful growth that doesn't feel like it merely occurs only for plot convenience. The movie also gave me a few genuine laughs, which is my primary test for anything daring to call itself a comedy (my favorite sequence, short but sweet, is Harry dicking around in the Sharper Image.
