Thanks for agreeing to an interview with The Drongo, or at least for being curious enough to read this FAQ!
This page lists answers to every question I've gotten about the interview process. If your question doesn't appear here, please email me.
What's the interview format?
You'll participate in the pre-interview survey, as well as the interview proper, by answering a set of questions that I email you.
What's the pre-interview survey like?
The survey collects a brief bio, a photo of you, and some other summary information.
I'll use your responses to guide me in writing your interview questions, and to offer readers additional details about you in the final published interview.
Where will my interview be published?
All subscribers to The Drongo will receive your interview over email. It will also be published on this website.
How long will it take to answer the questions?
30-60 minutes, depending on the length of your responses, how fast you write, and how much supplementary material you add.
How much time do I have to respond to the interview questions?
One calendar week after you receive your questions. (I'm still figuring things out, so if a week seems too short for most people I'll change this.)
What are the questions like?
The questions are unique to each interviewee, but here's a typical breakdown:
- one about how you came to be who you are, usually touching on your unusual hobby, your sick day job, etc.
- one to three questions on topics you suggested, or which go deeper into aspects of your answers to the first question
- one OPTIONAL hardball question which might push your buttons or challenge your worldview
There will also be dedicated space for you to add supplementary material as you see fit. Make up questions for yourself, provide extra photos, highlight your latest obsession, anything! I'll use at least one thing from this section, at my discretion, to round out the final interview.
What if I don't like my questions, or want to take the interview in a different direction?
That's legit! Talk to me and we'll figure out an angle we're both happy with.
