My maps are also not adequate but that has not stopped me working on a trade system based on Alexis's model (and using his 2012 reference & production figures.) I'm up to nearly 700 items implemented now. You can do it!
I would be happy to share details, screenshots, etc. if you like; I was thinking about preparing a brief presentation on it anyway for a programmers' interest group.
